[origin: WO2004033676A1] The invention relates to a method and an organism for the production of D-mannitol. The production of D-mannitol can be improved by providing said method and microorganism, using an organism expressing mannitol-2-dehydrogenase (MDH) and formate-dehydrogenase (FDH, for co-factor regeneration). The sugar substrates and/or sugar substrate precursors of MDH are transported via a non-phosphorylating sugar transport system into the organism. The sugar transport system is, advantageously, a glucose facilitator (GLF) from Zymomonas mobilis.
