Abstract (en)
[origin: WO2004039441A2] A syringe has a hollow body, a plunger slidably mounted in the body and a needle mounted at a first end of the body. A first sealing member, at a first end of the plunger and within the body, slidably seals against the body. A second sealing member seals against the body and slidably seals against the plunger shaft, the second sealing member being positioned between the first sealing member and a second, opposing end of the body. Pushing the plunger into the body creates a vacuum between the first and second sealing members. This can be used to draw liquid into the syringe for injection. Alternatively, the vacuum can be used to retract the needle automatically into the body, if the plunger is first pushed in a sufficient amount. A portion of the plunger is easily broken off after use to ensure that the syringe cannot be re-used.
