[origin: EP1420381A1] Method for uniquely identifying a cigarette filled packet (10) that has a packing element (11) for the cigarettes as well as a surrounding film (12). During the packaging production process, a unique code (14) is applied to either the packaging or the surrounding film. Also, during packaging, a unique characteristic of the packing element or surrounding film is measured. The unique measured value is stored with the identifying code in a storage medium thus forming a unique data record. The additional identifying characteristic is formed by the overlap between the film joining seam and a raster mark. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a method for identifying a cigarette packet; (b) an arrangement for uniquely marking a cigarette packet and storing a corresponding data record and; (c) an arrangement for identifying a uniquely marked cigarette packet.
