Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1564879A2] Control system for movement of liquid droplet between two or more solid substrates is designed to produce a reversible movement of a volume of a liquid (10) by means of an electrical command, comprising first (8) and second (4) electrical conductors and a means of inducing movement of the liquid volume from one to the other without contacting them. The system, designed to produce a reversible movement of a volume of a liquid (10) by means of an electrical command, consists of first (8) and second (4) electrical conductors and a means of inducing movement of the liquid volume from one to the other without contacting them. The second conductor is covered with a layer (6) of a non-wetting or low-wetting dielectric material, and both conductors can have a covering of nano-fibres, e.g. of carbon, coated with a continuous water-repellent and/or lipophobic polymer film. The system also has a means (2) of applying a voltage between the first and second conductors, which can be equipped with electrode matrices and temperature regulators. The liquid volume (10) can be a droplet of a conducting solution that floats in a non-miscible dielectric fluid (12) filling the space between the electrodes.
