[origin: WO2004034852A1] The invention modulates the air-volume in both mattress-type foam and traditional coil spring cores interactively, obtaining a wide variety of levels of density and indentation force deflection (IFD or spring-back force) .The mattress is enclosed in an airtight cover chamber (A) comprising a valve (12) for evacuating air. In addition, foam and coil spring cores may be enclosed in additional airtight chambers (B) (C) having their own valve (34, 46, 45) to evacuate air. Applying vacuum selectively within the various chamber of the mattress allows to modulate the comfort characteristics of the mattress. The invention takes advantage of the unique interactive behavior of self-inflating foam and coil spring constructions to create multiple levels of comfort for one or more users of the same device.
