[origin: WO2004042092A1] The invention relates to the recycling of gas used during the quenching process in a thermal treatment, for example. According to the invention, the gas is removed directly from the chamber (2) and is compressed to the pressure prevailing in the high-pressure container (1) rather than being decompressed into a gas buffer, an additional compression step (3) being connected if the pressure inside the chamber lies below a threshold value, wherefore conduits (10, 11) comprising overflow regulators (12, 13) lead to the individual compression steps.
