The invention relates to foam, which is used as a means for electrical insulation of medium and high voltage components. The pores of the foam contain gas and have suitable dielectric characteristics. The pores have a monodisperse distribution. The material can be a polymer or polymer foam. It is also possible to fill a space with discrete hollow particles, which inner hollow spaces represent pores.

Insbesondere bei Hochspannungsschaltanlagen werden bisher durchweg elektrische Isolationen aus Stickstoff (N 2 ) oder Schwefelhexafluorid (SF 6 ) verwendet. Gemäß der Erfindung wird als Mittel zur Isolierung ein Material (3) mit geeigneten dielektrischen Eigenschaften verwendet, wobei sich in diesem Material gasenthaltende Poren, die eine weitgehend monodisperse Verteilung haben, befinden. Das Material kann ein Polymer, insbesondere ein Polymerschaum, sein. Möglich sind aber auch Schüttungen von diskreten Materialhohlteilchen (40), deren innerer Hohlraum einer Pore entspricht.
