[origin: WO2004056570A1] The aim of the invention is to improve the quality during automatic real time monitoring of print images. This is achieved by means of a reference image, which is divided into segments in such a way that the pixels of said segments have approximately the same colour characteristic. The segments thus approximately reflect the structure of the reference image, each segment being assigned a reference value, which accurately describes the colour characteristic of the segment. The pixels of the actual image are compared with the respective reference value of the corresponding segment. Said comparison is extremely reliable as a result of the high quality of the reference value.
