[origin: EP1586703A1] In a process to manufacture or repair a calander drum (11) with a metal core (15) bearing a series of packed textile discs side-by-side (13), ring grooves (23) are cut into the surface between adjacent discs. In the repair process a resin-soaked (30) fibre sleeve (35). The sleeve is fabricated of a plastic fibre strengthened textile of a minimum predetermined thickness on the drum. The sleeve acts as a foundation for a rubber mantle (37). The calander drum is used e.g. in a paper glazing process. The textile material (13) is e.g. cotton or paper held in compression by end-plates. The grooves (23) are cut 3 mm to 20 mm deep.
