[origin: EP1589134A1] To knit a fabric with a laid weft, on a flatbed knitter, the selected needles (3) are extended to take the weft (5) in their hooks (31). When the weft has been laid in the hooks, the needles are retracted to bring the weft to a neighboring knitting edge. The stitch is formed with a knitting yarn, with the adjacent needle (3') moving over laid weft. The needle to knit the stitch is lifted over the base surface (11) sufficiently for its under side (32) to move over the laid weft. The weft can be laid in empty needles, or needles carrying stitches.
