[origin: EP1591948A1] The present invention is embodied in a barcode system (50) that includes an encoder (52) configured to create a two-dimensional color barcode representing data defined by a first data layer (105) and a second data layer (112), wherein the first data layer (105) is preserved and the second data layer (112) is lost during black and white copying of the color barcode (600). Data is encoded by luminance (706) in the first data layer and by hue (708) in the second data layer.
