[origin: WO2004090311A1] The invention relates to a method for operating an automatically igniting internal combustion engine wherein an average gas temperature in the cylinder is determined during combustion in the combustion chamber in such a manner that a gradient of the average gas temperature is calculated. As a result, a nitrogen oxide raw emission of the internal combustion engine is determined from either a value of the gradient of the average gas temperature and/or from a maximum value of the average gas temperature in the cylinder. Subsequently, the motor parameters are adjusted in such a manner that an average gas temperature gradient, wherein less NOx-emissions are formed, is produced during combustion.
