[origin: EP1614647A1] The deflection unit (10) to shift the path of a moving web (11) of paper or cardboard, at a papermaking machine or a coating applicator, has an air permeable surface (12) with pores in two layers (13,14). The pressure within the unit is at 1-12 bar, and especially 3-6 bar, to form separate air streams (E) as an air cushion between the deflection surface and the web. The air feed (L) uses ambient or conditioned air. The porous surface is a sintered material and/or a textile fabric and/or plastics.
