The cylinder has openings (5) for receiving fastening sections (6) of the mixing elements, which are welded to the cylinder from the outside. Independent claims are included for: (1) a rotary kiln comprising a cylinder as above; (2) production of active carbon by carbonization and subsequent activation of a carbonaceous material, where carbonization and/or activation is performed in a rotary cylinder or kiln as above.
