[origin: GB2402642A] A method of casting comprises the steps of sealing a mould 14 (Fig. 2) to a launder system, measuring the weight of the mould 14, pouring metal into the mould 14, monitoring the change in weight of the mould 14 as metal flows in and using this data to control the rate of flow of metal into the mould 14. The sealing force by which the mould 14 is attached to the launder system is monitored and kept within predefined limits. The change in weight of the mould 14 may be monitored simultaneously at different positions on the mould 14 to indicate how the metal is dispersed therein. Apparatus for performing this method comprises a mould support plate 26 supported in a floating manner by one or more load cells 30 (Fig. 5) to measure the weight of the mould 14, a rotatable cage 16 and clamp plate 18 whereby a mould 14 on the support plate 26 can be inverted.
