Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1642788A2] To provide a seat belt retractor in which two winding performances, i.e. winding a belt rapidly and winding the belt with high torque are achieved, while reduced power consumption of a motor and simplified control of the motor are also achieved. A clutch gear 43 is meshed with a carrier gear 31 by rotation of a motor in the normal direction, i.e. the belt winding direction in a state that a clutch pawl 49 is not engaged with an internal gear 30. Accordingly, a low reduction ratio power transmission mode is set so that a seat belt is wound up at a high speed and with low torque. As slack of the seat belt is removed and the belt load increases, the clutch pawl 49 becomes possible to be engaged with the internal gear 30. As the motor current increases and exceeds a preset value, the motor rotates reversely so that the clutch gear 43 separates from the carrier gear 31. Therefore, a high reduction ratio power transmission mode is set so that the belt is wound up at a low speed and with high torque (Figs. 5(a)-5(f)).
