[origin: DE10335645B3] The operating method has the cost for each undetected overlap in the mail sorting process and the cost for the subsequent sorting and distribution of each detected overlap calculated prior to the sorting operation, with determination of the detection rate and the error rate of the overlapping envelope detector from a setting parameter. During the sorting operation the actual overlapping rate is estimated at defined time intervals and used for adjustment of the setting parameter for the next operating interval for optimizing the operating costs.
