Abstract (en)

Shaft`s axial position detecting method involves providing a shaft (28) with a metallic region from a surface of the shaft to a radial depth from the surface at a longitudinal position. An eddy current is sensed to detect an alignment of one of two hardened metallic regions with a fixed sensing region at a respective time. A longitudinal position of the shaft is determined with respect to a cylinder (12) at the respective time based on the sensed current. An independent claim is also included for a system for detecting a position of a movable unit associated with a cylinder.
