[origin: EP1657204A2] A compact safety brake for a lift cabin has a housing containing a compact spring assembly (31) and a pneumatic/hydraulic release cylinder (35) operating against the spring. The servo/spring pressure is applied to braking pads (45) via a linkage (32, 32) which operates with a mechanical advantage to amplify the braking and release forces. The brake pads are pressed onto a brake and guide rail (42) fitted to the lift shaft.
