Abstract (en)

A security document has a cut out that is covered by a foil that is partly embedded at its edges within the document, or applied to one or both sides. The foil is introduced to the security document during the production process. In a further embodiment the foil material incorporates functional materials in the vicinity of the window aperture or the thickened embedded zone. The foil incorporates a filter or a magnifying glass to reveal an underlying feature. The functional layer may be an optical feature e.g. hologram, be an electrical conductor, a magnetic feature, a tactile feature or have diffractive properties that are visually recognisable and are machine readable. Also claimed is a commensurate foil material.
