[origin: WO2005038421A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the torque on gear shafts. The inventive method and device allow to cyclically measure the speed of a first gear shaft (2, 19) and the speed of a second gear shaft (3, 22) at a constant gear ratio. The first gear shaft (2, 19) is subject to a first torque and the second gear shaft (3, 22) is subject to a second torque and the second gear shaft (3, 22) is driven either directly or indirectly via gears (5, 6, 7, 8; 20, 21) by the first gear shaft (2, 19). A ratio is calculated from these two speeds and is stored, the actual ratio is compared with the ratio of the preceding measurement and if there is a difference between the ratio of the actual measurement and the preceding measurement, it is presumed that the torque on the first gear shaft (2, 19) has changed.
