Es wird ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung (1) zum Abwickeln einer Materialbahn von einer Materialbahnrolle (3) angegeben. Die Vorrichtung 1 weist eine Lagereinrichtung (5) auf, in der die Materialbahnrolle (3) drehbar gelagert ist. Man möchte eine Bahneinführung in eine nachgeschaltete Bahnbehandlungseinrichtung ohne oder nur mit geringem Eingriff eines Bedieners ermöglichen. Hierzu ist in Schwerkraftrichtung in einem Bereich unterhalb der Lagereinrichtung (5) eine Quertrenneinrichtung (7) angeordnet. Mit Hilfe der Quertrenneinrichtung (7) wird zumindest die äußere Lage der Materialbahnrolle durchtrennt. Danach wird der auf der Materialbahnrolle (3) liegende abgetrennte Rest (15, 16) der Materialbahn entfernt.
