[origin: WO2005054008A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for warning the driver of a motor vehicle of a traffic situation with a high collision risk. According to the invention, signals of at least one object detector, which represent the displacement variables of detected objects, in addition to the signals of at least one displacement sensor system of the driver's vehicle, can be fed to an evaluation device. The calculation unit calculates displacement trajectories for a predetermined duration for all detected objects and the driver's vehicle, taking into consideration maximum acceleration or deceleration values and maximum temporal modifications to acceleration or deceleration values. If an imminent collision is identified, the driver is issued with a warning that greater acceleration or deceleration values and/or temporal modifications to acceleration or deceleration values are required, in order to avoid a collision.
