[origin: EP1693509A1] Monitoring a press roll (4) in a machine for producing or finishing a fibrous web (1), where the press roll comprises a rotating cylinder (2) supported on a static pressure element (3) and the gap between the cylinder and the pressure element is lubricated with a liquid lubricant, comprises monitoring the state of the cylinder with optical and/or thermographic sensors that send a fault signal to a control unit (10) in the event of leakage or impending leakage, where either one sensor monitors the surface of the web or a tracer is added to the lubricant to improve optical leak detection.
