Device for pivoting and adjusting an applicator (4) in a coating machine for applying a liquid or paste to a traveling surface (5), which is either a paper, cardboard or other fibrous web or a transfer roll for transferring the coating to a fibrous web, comprises a hydraulic cylinder (2) for pivoting the applicator between a working position with the cylinder extended and a maintenance position with the cylinder retracted, where the axial extension of the cylinder has a spindle-type stroke adjuster (3) allowing fine adjustment of the applicator.
