[origin: EP1700804A2] The holding device for a material web roll (1) comprises a pivot (3) to support the roll, a wiper (4), and a drive (5) which can move the wiper relative to the longitudinal axis (L) of the pivot. The material web roll is rotatable relative to the wiper, and the drive can move the wiper into braking engagement with the roll to brake the roll during its rotation. The wiper encompasses the wiper in ring-form. A guard is provided to prevent the stripping of the material sheet roll during the braking.
