[origin: EP1541867A1] The piston compressor (5) for the compressing of gaseous media in at least two working chambers has a stepped piston (1), a first cylinder (7) to accommodate a first piston section (16) and to form a first working chamber (21), and at least one second cylinder (8) to accommodate a second piston section (17) and to form a second working chamber (22). The second piston section has a smaller diameter than the first, whereby each of the two cylinders is closed off by a plate (2,9) with valve arrangements. The second piston section is guided through an opening (20) in one of the plates (2).
