[origin: EP1705287A1] Closing of an extended gap between a smoothing roller (2) and a lower counter roller (3) in a device for smoothing a fiber web (especially paper, board or tissue) in a papermaking or finishing machine is effected by bringing the roller mantle (4) before or during closure of the entire gap length by a tensioner (5,6,7) or by suction (8) onto a press surface of pressing element (5) so as to contact the mantle (4) with the counter roller (3). An independent claim is also included for a smoothing device operating as above and provided with tensioners or suction so as to guarantee that on closure the mantle (4) lies over its entire length on the surface of pressing element (5).
