[origin: WO2005070283A1] A retractor retaining device (10) retains an otherwise band-held retractor (12) in a retracting position within a surgical wound (22). The retractor retaining device includes a clamp (50) that is attachable to a retractor support (15) that is positioned about the wound. A retaining plate (28) is attached to the clamp (50) and engages a flexible loop (24). The flexible loop (24) is detachably attached to the retaining plate (28) for engaging a handle (20) of the hand held retractor (12) such that the hand held retractor (12) is retained in the retracting position.
