Calender roller (A) comprising a core and plastic layer (7) in which channels (10) for a coolant are arranged, has diameter 800-1600 mm, and (7) has, over the entire circumference, an approximately uniform rigidity and can bear stretching loads of at least 350 N/mm. An independent claim is included for a calender comprising (A) and a counter roller (3) that forms a nip with (A), where the diameter of (3) is smaller than that of (A).
