The invention relates to a handheld device (1) for mechanically machining workpieces, in particular drilling, milling or grinding ceramic tiles, paving stones or similar, by means of a drive unit (5) and a tool receiving device (7) which can be driven thereby and which is used to receive a tool (2). The device (1) comprises a container (9) which is used to receive a cooling or lubricating agent, and a connecting device (13) which forms a connection (20, 21, 24, 25) for the cooling or lubricating agent between the container (9) and the tool receiving device (7). The invention also relates to an associated container (9) in addition to a method for operating said type of device (1).
