[origin: WO2005092524A1] According to the claimed process, postal items separated from a stack and forming a stream of postal items that follow one another in the longitudinal direction are guided on a transport and point section (2) to associated sorting terminals (1), according to determined target addresses. The average set gap between the postal items leaving the separation device is smaller than the gap between the postal items with the longest transport paths to the sorting terminals (1). The gaps between every two postal items are individually adjusted before the transport and point section (2) by means of a controllable gap adjustment device (4) as a function of the postal item with the shortest transport path to the associated sorting terminal (1), so as to correspond to a minimum gap which is previously determined by a statistical survey. During shifting of the postal items, those postal items that disturb gap adjustment are ejected.
