[origin: EP1728713A2] A bicycle has a pedal crankshaft (3) and a rear brake operated by back-pedaling that operates through two conical couplings (10, 16). Power is transmitted to the chain by a sprocket wheel. The crankshaft (3) has a helical thread (59) surrounded by a slide (18). The hollow crankshaft has an inner thread. The slide engages and disengages the couplings in response to crankshaft advance or reverse.
