[origin: WO2005114595A1] The invention relates to a method and to a device for recognising the authenticity of security characteristics on valuable documents and/or security documents. At least one security element is applied to the valuable document and/or security document or inserted into the valuable document and/or security document, and the security element is integrated in a geometrical pattern. The valuable document and/or security document is optically scanned and the security characteristic is excited with the aid of periodically pulsed electromagnetic radiation in order to emit radiation from which luminescent raw signals can be obtained.
