Abstract (en)
A personalized image (3a, 3b) is formed on a security document plastics substrate by: (a) obtaining image data from a subject for the image; (b) converting the image data into text data by assigning characters, so that image contours, color differences and shading are retained; (c) programming a laser or printing device with the data; and (d) burning or printing the characters on the substrate surface. A personalization method for generating an image (3a, 3b) on a plastics substrate of a security document involves: (a) obtaining image data from a subject for the image; (b) converting the image data into text data, by assigning characters to individual local adjacent and combined image data, so that image contours, color differences and shading are retained; (c) programming a laser device with the text data; and (d) burning the characters present as text data with a laser beam from a laser device movable along the substrate surface. Independent claims are included for: (1) a variant of the process, comprising steps (a) and (b) as above followed by (c') programming a thermo-direct or retransfer printing device with the text data and (d') printing the characters present as text data on the substrate surface using the printing device; (2) a corresponding device, consisting of devices (i) for obtaining the image data from an image subject, (ii) converting the image data into text data and (iii) programming a laser device or a thermo-direct or retransfer printing device; and (3) a personalized security document, with a plastics substrate on which an image of characters has been burned with a laser or printed.
