[origin: WO2005118760A1] The present invention provides a paste-like cleaning or detergent composition comprising a) a surfactant component comprising a compound of the general formula R<1>-COOM (1), a fatty alcohol alkoxylate and/or an oxo alcohol alkoxylate with an average degree of alkoxylation at least 5; and optionally an anionic surfactant; b) a compound of the general formula R<2>-O-R<3>(II); c) water and/or a compound of the general formula X-CH2-(CHY)n-CH2-Z (III), provided that at least 2 hydroxyl groups are present; d) an alkalinity source, and e) one or more organic and/or anorganic builders on a non-silicate basis; wherein the composition essentially is free from graying inhibitors on a cellulose basis, silicates and phosphates. Moreover, the present invention relates to a method for washing textiles using said composition, wherein the waste water accumulated during the washing process may be purified by a membrane filtration unit comprising reverse osmosis steps.
