[origin: EP1749785A1] In an elevator apparatus, the traveling speed of a car is monitored by a speed monitoring portion. The speed monitoring portion generates an abnormality detection signal when the speed of the car being raised reaches a set overspeed that is set in advance. The car is mounted with an upward movement safety device for stopping the upward movement of the car when the abnormality detection signal is generated.
