[origin: WO2005015516A1] A method for communication between an electronic tag and at least two base stations, wherein said electronic tag comprises a memory for storing a code having a plurality of levels, a means for reading out a series of code values at the various levels, at least one antenna for communication with a base station, and control means that respond to a read query from a base station (120) by causing said read-out means to read out the code values at at least one level, causing an antenna to transmit back a response signal (125), and altering the code in said memory (110) in response to a write query from a base station (105). The method comprises a write step carried out when the electronic tag passes close to the first base station and involving writing a base station proximity value into a predetermined level of the code (110), and a transmission step carried out when the electronic tag passes close to the second base station and involving responding to the first read query from the second base station by causing said tag to transmit a signal indicative of at least the value of said code at the level of which the value indicates the proximity to the first base station (125).
