[origin: EP1754418A1] The cellulose fibers used for the production of cigarette filters are prepared in order to form a fleece (2) guided through several processing stations. The fleece (2) can be of different dimensions in particular regarding its width. A softening substance (4) is applied with nozzles (3) from below onto the filter-tow (2) moved by appropriate units. The amount is regulated with an electrically moved cover sheet (7). The width of the filter tow (2) is determined by device (20,21) incorporating a scanner, a sensor, or a light barrier and the amount of the substance (4) adjusted accordingly. An independent claim is given for a device for the determination of the area to be treated.
