[origin: EP1757733A1] The invention is concerned with a device and method for processing a rail to restore its geometry after butt welding. A guiding beam is temporarily fixated longitudinally relative to the rail. A to the guiding beam mounted machining head is moved by moving the guiding means crosswise relative to the rail along a guiding track, following the rail perimeter. The a grinding head connected to the guiding beam moves to and fro longitudinally of the rail along the guiding beam while the guiding beam stepwise moves crosswise of the rail along the guiding track.
