[origin: EP1609787A1] Preparation of 4-(alpha-hydroxyalkyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-one compounds (I) comprises reaction of dioxan-5-one compound (5) with an aldehyde compound (6) in the presence of proline (7). Preparation of 4-(alpha-hydroxyalkyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-one compounds (I) of formule (1)-(4) comprises reaction of dioxan-5-one compound of formula (5) with an aldehyde compound of formula (6) in the presence of proline of formula (7). R : alkyl, aryl or heterocycle containing one or more O, N, S, P or B (all optionally substituted); R 1, R 2alkyl, aryl, heterocycle containing one or more O, N, S, P or B (all optionally substituted) or H; Ra : H, OH or SiX 3; and X : alkyl or aryl. An independent claim is also included for 4-(alpha-hydroxyalkyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-one compounds (I) (excluding the compounds with R 1=R 2=CH 3). [Image] [Image].
