It is proposed in a printing apparatus for transferring toner (9) from a toner-bearing film element (1) to an image receiver (4) to be printed by locally heating the film element (1), with film transport means (2) being provided for transporting the film element (1) relative to the image receiver (4) along a first direction (3) of transport, and with image receiver transport means (5) being provided for transporting the image receiver (4) relative to the film element (1) along a second direction (6) of transport, for achieving a high resolution with simple means that the first direction (3) of transport is arranged substantially normal to the second direction (6) of transport.
