Method for closing the front ends of rectangular pipes (2) comprises placing both edge regions (5, 6) of the pipe end (1) on the longitudinal side and the edge regions of the pipe end on the short side using a roll so that a cover is formed in the gap produced and is welded to the edge regions on both sides.
