A paper mill has a paper web (1) drying or finishing station with a high-power drying cylinder (2, 3) of outer radius of 100 cm or more, The web is in contact with the drum through an angle of at least 150. After separation from the cylinder (2, 3) the hot web passes through an evaporation section (7) at least 50 cm long. The web residence period in the evaporation section is at least 0.1 sec. The drying drum diameter is preferably greater than 175 cm. The web is in contact with the drum through an angle of preferably 210C. The drum is steam heated and has a steam supple at 6 bar delivering at least 60 kg/m(2. The drying station has a drying hood with a supply of a hot medium. The cylinder is partly surrounded by a water-heated pressure jacket.
