Abstract (en)
Device for spreading a carbon fiber tow (2) to form a carbon fiber tape (3) comprises comprises a heater (14) and a spreader (9), where the heater comprises a series of electrodes (15-17) that are contacted by the tow as it moves towards the spreader and are connected to a voltage source. An independent claim is also included for spreading a carbon fiber tow to form a carbon fiber tape by heating and then widening the tow, where heating is effected by generating a current flow in a predetermined length of the tow.
