Applying a liquid or semisolid medium to a traveling web by curtain coating comprises taking precautions to avoid or reduce application of medium to the side faces and/or underside of the web and/or to remove any medium so applied and/or to avoid or reduce excessive application of medium to the upper edge of the web and/or to remove any medium so applied. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for applying a liquid or semisolid medium to a traveling web by curtain coating, comprising means for avoiding or reducing application of medium to the side faces and/or underside of the web and/or for removing any medium so applied and/or for avoiding or reducing excessive application of medium to the upper edge of the web and/or for removing any medium so applied.
