[origin: WO2006032434A1] In order to improve security when, in trade, payment is made with cash, a merchandise scanning cash register is provided with a two-channel scanner. The first channel operating with a first wavelength in the visible region of the spectrum serves both for detecting barcode information (5) applied to the merchandise (4) as well for detecting a value coding (7) of a banknote (6) presented for paying for the merchandise. The second channel of the scanner (2) serves to verify the authenticity of the banknote (6) and operates in the IR region of the spectrum.
