Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2006053875A1] The invention relates to a method for starting a field device for process automation engineering consisting in performing an operating program (BP) on a control unit (BE) connectable to the field device and to a service computer (SR) of a field device manufacturer by means of a public network (for example Internet). Said operating program (BP) communicates with the field device and reads out the serial number and software version number thereof. Afterward, the operating program (BP) communicates with the service computer (SR) of the field device manufacturer and determines the actual software version number assigned to the serial number of the field device. In case, when two software version numbers are not coincided with each other, a corresponding signal is produced and, if necessary, the actual software version is loaded by the service computer (SR) and transmitted to the field device in the third stage.
