Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2006086028A2] A finger guide device that positions a finger of a subject on a fingerprint sensor in a manner optimal for the operation of authentication or identification while grasping a stylus or pen. Authentication or identification takes place by fingerprint matching. The finger guide device may also be used for enrollment of the initial fingerprint data into the system through one or more readings of generally the same relevant portions of the fingerprint for translation into a template for future comparison or matching. The finger guide device non-forcibly guides the subject finger into a position where a relevant portion of the finger is aligned with the fingerprint scanner or sensor so that said relevant portion will correlate with generally same relevant portions of the fingerprint previously translated into the template. The finger guide device may also serve to provide temperature or temperature equivalent tactile feedback or other forms of user feedback. The finger guide device may also contain an outer surface ridge that feels uncomfortable due to application of a high pressure per square inch on small areas of the finger if the finger is incorrectly positioned to encourage correct placement of the finger while holding the stylus or pen. The front of the finger guide device may have sufficient steepness of its sides and shortness of radius of curvature in order to serve as a stop positioning the tip of the finger ahead of the center of the sensor where a relevant portion of the finger will be aligned opposite the sensor. The finger guide device material or surface may be electrically conductive and thereby serve as a means to transmit a driver signal to the finger tissue to facilitate the improved use of capacitive or other types of electronic fingerprint sensors requiring this electrical potential sensing means. The finger guide device and stylus or pen may be used cooperatively with a dynamic signature verification system to authenticate or identify the writer or for the alternate or combined purpose of verifying that the writer has signed his signature.
