[origin: DE102006004602B3] The method involves measuring pressure in a rail of a pressure control valve, and determining a control flow of the pressure control valve. A stored pre-controlled engine characteristic is adjusted by a regression process under inclusion of the measured pressure and the determined control flow, where the stored pre-controlled engine characteristic is an analytical function or a sum of analytical functions or a sum of finite units. An independent claim is also included for an electronic control unit for implementing a method for approximating a stored pre-controlled engine characteristic of a pressure control valve of a common rail system to an effective pre-controlled engine characteristic.
